Scout Led Troop

What is a Scout Led Troop?
In Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), the troop is designed to be run by youth leaders, such as the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Patrol Leaders, and other elected or appointed Scout positions. The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters provide coaching and safety oversight, but they do not “run the show.” This structure allows young people to develop leadership, communication, and responsibility skills in real time.
Weekly Meetings:
The SPL creates an agenda with input from the PLC.
Meetings usually follow a format: opening ceremony, skill instruction, patrol activities, game/fun, announcements, and closing.
Scouts themselves teach skills (knot tying, first aid, camping prep), while adults support as needed.
Organizing Events & Campouts:
Scouts propose ideas for trips (hiking, camping, service projects).
The Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) votes on activities and sets the calendar.
Scouts handle the logistics: menus, duty rosters, equipment lists, and program plans.
Adults review plans for safety and feasibility but let Scouts make decisions.
