Scout Led Troop

Troop 476 Montebello Scout Lead Leadership

What is a Scout Led Troop?

Youth-Led Scouting Builds Real Leadership Skills

In Scouting America, troops are designed to be youth-led. Scouts take on roles such as Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Patrol Leaders.

While Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters provide coaching and safety guidance, they do not run the troop. This structure allows youth to develop leadership, communication, and decision-making skills in real time.

Weekly Meetings:

  • The SPL creates an agenda with input from the PLC.

  • Meetings usually follow a format: opening ceremony, skill instruction, patrol activities, game/fun, announcements, and closing.

  • Scouts themselves teach skills (knot tying, first aid, camping prep), while adults support as needed.

Organizing Events & Campouts:

  • Scouts propose ideas for trips (hiking, camping, service projects).

  • The Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) votes on activities and sets the calendar.

  • Scouts handle the logistics: menus, duty rosters, equipment lists, and program plans.

  • Adults review plans for safety and feasibility but let Scouts make decisions.
