What is Scouting America?
Scouting America is one of the nation’s largest and most recognized youth development organizations, formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). After more than a century of history, the organization adopted the new name Scouting America in 2024 to better reflect its mission of inclusivity, representing all young people, boys and girls, who seek adventure, leadership, and community through the Scouting program.
The mission of Scouting America is simple but powerful:
To prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Scouting America is designed to develop well-rounded youth through programs that focus on character, citizenship, leadership, and physical fitness. The organization provides structured opportunities for youth ages 5 through 20, with programs tailored to different age groups:
Cub Scouting (Ages 5-10)
Family-oriented program for younger children (both boys and girls).
Fun activities like camping, Pinewood Derby races, outdoor adventures, and community service.
Parents and guardians actively participate, making it a family-centered experience.
Scouts BSA (Ages 11-17)This is the program most people think of when they hear “Scouts.”
Open to both boys and girls, organized into separate troops.
Focuses on outdoor adventure, leadership training, personal growth, and service.
Youth can earn merit badges in over 135 subjects, ranging from outdoor skills to STEM and business.
The highest rank is Eagle Scout, a prestigious achievement recognized nationwide by colleges, employers, and community leaders.
Venturing & Sea Scouts (Ages 14-20)High-adventure programs where young men and women plan and lead their own activities.
Venturing emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and exploration.
Sea Scouts focuses on nautical skills, sailing, and maritime safety.
Exploring (Ages 10-20)
Career-based program that gives youth hands-on learning experiences with professionals in fields such as law enforcement, healthcare, engineering, aviation, and business.
